It’s been one heck of a busy week. It started off on a somewhat bad foot when i realized that i accidentally stored my backup on the wrong partition before reformatting to ext3, and subsequently lost the local copy of about a month’s worth of work. Now luckily, the big players (namely, raspberry and PNP) had been committed to CVS before the reformat, so nothing of vital importance was lost. However, some of my pet scripts were set back, and i lost a couple hours start of work on methberry.

Monday saw me getting my resume out last minute for a job offering at SFU. I somehow doubt i’ll get the job, even though it looked really interesting and right up my alley. I’ve got plenty of friends in various positions there, and it’s a politically driven entity, it would be my suspicion that someone was already hand-picked for the position beforehand, public announcements being nothing more than a formality.

For the past several days i’ve been switching back and forth between tweaking ubuntu and working on a project for a client. The communication chain is several people long, and at least one of the nodes i’m talking through is highly incompetent which is causing me a certain amount of frustration: This comes to a head when i get a supercilious email chiding me for doing my job, having gone ahead and implemented a flat-file data storage scheme (which they themselves had recommended) while waiting a week for them to respond with whether or not they could handle sql. Hello. They put me on hold for a week while my client is pushing me to get the job done, then come back to me saying “go ahead with your own idea (ie, use a sql database)” after giving me a very clear indication days prior that they were wanting to go other directions, they have nothing but my utter contempt for wasting my time, and a severe downgrade in my overall opinion of their competence.

So i sit back now with a glass of Vieux[sic] Chateau de Roi, having enjoyed an otherwise pleasant weekend. Friday night i mowed the lawn and saturday afternoon was the MOD Team meeting. Saturday evening was a small barbeque here for a couple of friends before heading out on the town to really celebrate. The reason for this, of course, is that i turned 23 on saturday. (yesterday). Unless you’re a severe geek or you read this sentance, you probably won’t recognize the significance of this post’s title. It was a fairly low-key evening, and that’s fine with me, i’m a passive sort of person and excitement tends to bring the camels out of me. Speaking of which, i’ve finally put up some content in the ‘Camels’ section. It’s worth a read if you haven’t already, and sheds some light on one of my peculiarities. The camel has been with me for just over 2 years now.

Today i visted the client’s house and got a large bunch of data moved. This is excellent, as i’m going to be packaging it up and sending it off to Toronto probably just as soon as i finish posting this. If they don’t have their act together by wednesday, i’m probably going to be implementing it on a local server. Outsourcing the storage of live mission-critical data to an affiliate who wants to check to make sure your data is acceptable with their website content policies is a headache like few others. Especially because it’s damn slow.

Got back and had a nice dinner with the rents, now enjoying aforementioned glass of white wine and listening to some ff6/retro 80’s electric guitar remix. Terra In Black. I swear, this track rocks. If you’ve ever played final fantasy, or are familiar with the works of Nobou Uematsu, it’s really worth checking out.

Methberry and contract work commences on the morrow. Whee!!!!

I had the same kind of problem with a backup once. I solved it by buying a third harddisk with the only purpose of backing up. :D

Wow, it really does sound busy.

At least this client is paying…. right…?

The client isn’t the problem. He’s a great guy and he understands the situation, it’s just the techies in Toronto that are making things difficult. Hopefully most of this will be resolved by wednesday

bwai. I was under the impression that you lost ‘loads of data’ from that fuckup.

just goes to show how good IRC rumors are, I guess.
