All the flavours of the Linuxfruit

Xore

Well, it took long enough to get to this point, but now i’m here, and hopefully here for good. After several abortive attempts at getting linux running on my laptop, which, while linux *worked*, it failed for a variety of reasons, inclusive of missing drivers, me being a n00b, the difficulties of manually configuring a bootloader, me being a n00b, me being a n00b, etc. Finally, after going through several install disks of different distros, i’ve landed on Ubuntu. It actually came with my laptop’s video drivers (sorry, debian) and didn’t require me to manually configure a bootloader in order to dual-boot (sorry, gentoo). Now, many linux geeks will scoff at this, and to a certain degree i’ll agree that, yes, i did indeed n00b out rather than rising to the challenge. However, my primary goal at this point is to get myself situated on a working linux system that can completely replace everything i have on my windows partition… while it may take some time to get all my customizations and tweaks in place, i don’t want to have to spend hours seeking and installing drivers or roaming through google and reams of man pages just to be able to use it in the first place.

Now i can, at my own leisure figure out things like manually configuring a dual-boot on my spare desktop, so that it’ll be easier to move to different distros that are more difficult to setup in the future. So begins the process of migrating all my archives off ntfs and onto a filesystem that is read/writeable from linux. Fat32 is the most obvious first choice, however, it has it’s own drawbacks which i’ve run into from time to time. in the meanwhile, i’ll probably be ending up doing the harddrive shuffle, moving things around to free up my documents partition (currently ntfs) and convert it to ext3, i guess. I really want to work towards not only becoming independant from windows, but actually setting things up so that using Ubuntu actually empowers me more than windows. I’m not sure that this is actually an ideal way of doing things, but for now, I think it’s a great way to force myself to gain an increasing familiarity with linux.

That aside, the past few days have been interesting. Sunday night / early monday morning saw some interesting stuff on SA forums. I’m not an SA Goon, but some people pointed these out to me. Later, one of my friends from SFU invited the author into our university chat channel and it turns out he’s a pretty cool guy.

Over the course of the past couple days i’ve succeeded in finishing rewriting most of the PNP segment of Locus (this needs a new name… the PNP segment has definately detached itself from Locus by this point). It now uses cache (yay!) and i’ve completely re-written the admin interface: it now makes use of an embedded template (bypassing the necessity of loading template files in the admin panels, while keeping the strength of the system itself) which will keep the code nice and clean. In keeping with that, i’m seriously considering embedding another entity-type in with the system, now that it’s starting to take better form.

Raspberry needs a cvs commit, which i’m going to be doing as soon as i finish importing (parts of) localhost onto ext3. When that’s done, i’m probably going to be starting in on Methberry (i’ll need to add an entry on the projects page), Raspberry’s big brother.

Need also to finish getting my resume spliced back together (this really should be my first priority) so that i can start applying for work ASAP. There’s a couple places that have openings that i’m really interested in.

So much to do, so many ways to procrastinate and not do it…

Xore, I want you to listen to me. Procrastination is evil. When you think of ways to get out of doing what must be done, forcefully slap your hand several times and yell “NO!”

I recently got into a wonderful routine of doing all of my homework as soon as I can, AND going to bed earlier on school nights instead of spending half the night online. It’s so much more pleasant like this. ;)

KR, if you manage to throw off procrastination, you absolutely must give me tips. I need major, major help in this area.

    Gooooooood I need help.

Xore, you come up with the most interesting titles in the world. It’s a pity I can’t understand half of what you write.

That story does look pretty amazing. I never thaught I’d see something worthwhile come out of something awful.
